Councillors Code of Conduct
In May 2003, the Standard Commission brought in a new Code of Conduct (external website) which applies to the behaviour of all Councillors throughout Scotland.
As Councillors are elected to make decisions on behalf of the people of the Borders, they must act at all times with propriety and due diligence. The Code deals with such matters as:
-
declarations of interest,
-
hospitality offers,
-
dealing with staff and constituents.
Protocol on Councillor's personal conduct/behaviour
Scottish Borders Council has also approved its own Code of Conduct for Councillors, which is equally binding, giving a local perspective on the main Code, and dealing specifically with the relationship between Councillors and Council staff.
The Standards Commission for Scotland deals with any complaints of alleged breaches of the national code by Councillors.
