The £10m Heart of Hawick project is one of the biggest and most unique regeneration projects in the Scottish Borders.

Official Heart of Hawick website now available

About the project

The project is a multi-agency arts and heritage initiative designed to contribute to the social, cultural and economic regeneration of Hawick and the wider Borders.  Key elements include the complete transformation of two previously empty shell buildings in the centre of Hawick.

Tower Mill (below left) now a brand new cinema/theatre, cafe/bar visitor centre.

Heritage Hub (below right) now the new Scottish Borders Archive and Local History Centre.

The project also includes:

  • Borders Textile Towerhouse - substantial renovation/refurbishment including a move for the registrar service from the town hall
  • Civic space - the creation of a central, flat, easily accessed off-road civic space for performances, events, markets, street theatre, festivals etc.
  • New Footbridge/cyclebridge over the River Teviot opened 24th November 2005.
  • Town Centre Improvements - to improve the areas around the Tower Mill, Towerdykeside, Tower Knowe, High Street, Kirkstile and Silver street areas.
