May 2007 Update

Scheme 1 – Bridge Opening

Local Galashiels Councillor Bill Lamb cut the ribbon to open the new Station Brae permanent road link in Galashiels at a ceremony on Monday 23rd April.

The ceremony marks the completion of the first section of the Galashiels Inner Relief Road. The road link, which connects Melrose Road with the new roundabout at Station Brae will allow free flow of two way traffic and replaces the temporary road put in place in November to support the opening of the new Currie Road and Gala Water Bridge. The ceremony was attended by representatives from SBC's Technical Services, contractor Raynesway and the Galashiels Roads Consultation Group.

There will be a set of temporary traffic lights on the Station Brae link road until around 11th May to allow completion of permanent safety barriers for the railway.

Scheme 1 – Staff Car Park for the Health Centre and Landscaping

Work on the staff car park to the rear of the Health Centre has recommenced. This was delayed pending completion of the railway bridge and the Station Brae link road. This car park should be completed by 25th May.

Landscaping and planting works should be completed by the end of May now that the railway bridge and the Station Brae link road have been completed.

Scheme 2 – Land Acquisition, Detailed Design and Advance Works

Land acquisition for the Galashiels Inner Relief Road Scheme 2 should be completed soon. The detailed design and tender documentation is substantially complete and the scheme will go out to tender once the land has been secured. Advance works for the scheme have started with ecological survey, archaeological survey and photographic recording work being completed in March. Some of the findings and photographs were passed to the Old Gala Club for the historical records.

Demolition of buildings in the Burgh Yard is due to start on 8 May. In addition, widening of the Gala Water Bridge road link to 3-lane will take place in May/June.
