Getting to the Scottish Borders Area

If you are travelling a large distance, you will first need to get to close to Scottish Borders.
The principle cities to aim for are Edinburgh, Newcastle and Carlisle.

If you are travelling by road from the north, or plan on either catching a plane, or a train then Edinburgh will be your first landmark.

Aim for the Edinburgh by-pass (the A720), and turn off at the Dalkeith exit (also known as the Sheriffhall Roundabout). This exit is at the southern end of the by-pass. Take the A68 (also known as the Old Dalkeith Road).

If you are travelling from within Edinburgh City, basic advice is to head south, look for directions to Dalkeith, Galashiels or Jedburgh, and of course the A68. Edinburgh maps are available on the multimap website for specific details.

If you are travelling from the south (by road) you will approach our region from either the east or the west.

If you are travelling from the south west (from Manchester, or Birmingham perhaps), then Carlisle is your landmark. Stay on the M6, travelling past the exits 42 and 43 to Carlisle. Turn of the motorway at Junction 44, and follow the signs for the A7 north, and for the towns Longtown, Langholm, Hawick and Galashiels.

If you are travelling the south east (from London, or Sheffield perhaps) then Newcastle is your first landmark. Follow the M1 (and at times the A1) north towards Newcastle. Filter left on to the A1 at Junction 65, (the M1 splits here, left becoming the A1, and the right becoming the A194 (M) which heads into Newcastle).
On the north side of Newcastle, turn onto the A696 to Ponteland. Travel north through Ponteland, Belsay, Otterburn, Rochester, and the A696 will turn into the A68. You will cross the border into Scotland after about 25 miles.

Once on the A68 please follow directions on the 'From the edge of the region to HQ' page.
