Roads and Fleet Management has the dual role of being:
1. The Council's custodian of road and bridges within the Scottish Borders (with the exception of trunk roads). A list of public roads can be found here. It has been estimated that the nominal value of this asset exceeds £1,615 million.The service also manages the Borders' transportation strategy, passenger transport and traffic management.
In this role, the Service's mission is " to develop and co-ordinate the Council's transport strategy and to manage the Council's road and property infrastructure in a condition that satisfies stakeholder, legislative and technical requirements." It will do this by providing a range of services that includes:
- Lighting & Communications
- Development Control (Roads)
- Road Network Management
- Traffic Management and Road Safety
- Winter Service
- SBcContracts
2. In control of the Council's vehicle and plant fleet, used by all departments. It maintains the fleet in a safe, roadworthy condition and manages the Council's Operator's Licence in accordance with relevant legal requirements.
