Technical Services

Welcome to Technical Services

Our Executive Members are Cllr Jim Fullarton and Cllr Len Wyse

Our Interim Director is Mr Ray Oxby

Technical Services is a large multi-disciplinary department, created, as its name suggests, to manage and run the authority's technical, public facing functions. The department is principally concerned with:

  • the design, building, management and maintenance of roads, bridges and public buildings and facilities, so that they may be used to best advantage and are always fit for purpose
  • transport planning and traffic management, ensuring that road travel can be used conveniently and safely and with due regard to the economics of and care for the environment
  • waste collection, disposal and recycling, attempting to reduce landfilling, thereby meeting stringent government targets for waste reduction/recycling
  • public parks and gardens, open spaces and floral displays, to provide a pleasant environment for recreation in towns and villages
  • providing an environmental health service to reduce risk and eliminate the danger to human health associated with the living and working environment
  • providing a trading standards service protecting the interests of consumers and businesses with free and confidential advice on a variety of issues
  • running the extensive fleet of vehicles and construction plant needed for the Council to deliver its services in a manner that is cost effective and minimises impact on the environment
  • providing a catering and cleaning service for public buildings in the Borders, including schools
  • providing a school, college and social work transport service
  • co-ordinating public transport services in the area
