Information about Trading Standards

We offer a free and confidential Consumer Advice service and Business Advice service. A Money Advice service is also available for those with debt problems.

About Us

We are responsible for enforcing and providing advice on United Kingdom and European Law.

When you go to our section of the website, you will find information on a wide range of issues including:

We provide a  Consumer Advice Service:

We offer a free and confidential advice service on all aspects of consumer law, both Trading Standards and civil law.

If you have a consumer problem, please contact Consumer Direct  first.  They are on 08454 04 05 06 and are open from 8:00am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday and from 9:00am to 1:00pm on Saturdays.

.........a Business Advice Service:

We operate the 'Home Authority Principle', which means that if your business is based in the Scottish Borders we will try to provide you with up to date information that is relevant to your business, through a nominated contact Officer.  We aim to help your business stay competitive by providing specialist knowledge.  We also have a laboratory to provide accurate determinations of mass and calibration of your own equipment using traceable standards.

.........and a  Money Advice Service:

Our free and confidential service will support you no matter how large or small your debts are.  We will help you:

  • Maximise income
  • Minimise expenditure
  • Check liability for debts
  • Get interest frozen/admin charges stopped
  • Negotiate on your behalf
  • Apply for benefits
  • Give advice on debt recovery and court action
  • Keep things in perspective
  • Provide support/listening ear
