Contaminated Land
Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 came into force in Scotland in July 2000. It places responsibilities on local authorities to deal with contaminated land in accordance with a published Contaminated Land Strategy. Potentially contaminated land may also be addressed through the planning system.

Contaminated Land Register
In accordance with Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 Scottish Borders Council maintains a Public Register of Contaminated Land within the Scottish Borders. Land on the public register is judged to meet the legal definition of contaminated land and has been formally identified.
