Principal Role:
Trading Standards attempts to ensure a fair and safe trading environment and is is bound by statute from both the UK government and the Scottish Government. It also provides consumer and business advice and debt counselling services.
Impact on Public Safety:
Trading Standards is responsible for the enforcement of consumer protection legislation relating to the safety of goods, including electrical appliances, upholstered furniture, toys, etc. The Section deals with the safety aspect of the storage of petroleum, poisons and explosives (fireworks and cartridges). The Section is also responsible for the enforcement of Animal Health legislation and has a major part to play in respect of associated emergencies (e.g. foot and mouth, avian flu).
