General Service Responsibilities:

  • Design, procurement and construction supervision of major infrastructure schemes including Environmental Assessments
  • Route Studies - important strategic links
  • Structures - assessment and inspection
  • Structural design of buildings for the Council
  • Topographical Surveys and Ground Investigation
  • Laboratory Services - sampling and testing of construction materials

Principal Role:

The service provides the Engineering Design and Construction Management service for the Council. Work includes route studies, design, procurement and construction supervision of major road and bridge improvements.

Structural design includes the assessment and inspection of bridges and buildings, and the detailed design of structural elements of new buildings for the Council and others.

The Survey and Ground Investigation service provides large-scale mapping and ground investigation analysis (including contaminated land) for clients in all portfolios.

The Laboratory Service samples and tests construction materials for compliance.

Impact on Public Safety:

Extensive work is done in the preparation of schemes to minimise risks that result from the works to road users and to Council staff. Care is taken to ensure the Council only use contractors and consultants that are competent in their field of work.
