For essential or emergency enquiries about winter travel on Council roads, please ring the Winter Service Desk on St Boswells (01835) 825076. Please note we do not deal with trunk road management and maintenance (including winter service) on the A1, A68, A7 (south of Galashiels), A6091 and A 702.

Principal Role:

Management and maintenance of the road network (excluding trunk roads) is delivered through five area offices,a central team and an in-house civil engineering contractor called SbcContracts. The area offices are the point of contact for the public, councillors and area committees. Staff at these offices identify, instruct and monitor maintenance works and minor improvement works. They also arrange road closures, permits for skips and scaffolds, etc.
The central team manages the quality management system, the pavement management system, co-ordination of road and utility works, SbcContracts workforce and provides the winter service desk. From area offices, regular safety inspections of footways and carriageways based on a national code of practice and repair of safety defects are carried out. They also take calls regarding safety from police, public (potholes, accidents, etc.)
