Mr John Pollitt

General Service Statistics:

  • Maintains 1250 Bridges of which over 700 are stone built arches

Principal Role:

Inspections identify the need to budget for the management and maintenance of bridges, which deteriorate through time. Ever increasing traffic is subjecting old bridges to loads far beyond those for which they were originally designed. The Service carries out as a matter of priority, all urgent works reported or identified by inspection and programmes other work to fit available funding.

Impact on Public Safety:

Bridges have to deal with floods, water seepage, freezing and thawing, traffic loading and vibration, so their condition is always changing.  Inspections every 2 years record defects and prompt repairs to reduce the risk of potential catastrophic failure.
