Bridge Maintenance

General Information on Bridge Maintenance

Yair Bridge

What we do:

There are 1250 road bridges in the Borders of which over 700 are stone built arches. Bridges have to deal with floods, water seepage, freezing and thawing, traffic loading and vibration, so their condition is always changing.  Inspections every 2 years record defects and prompt repairs to reduce the risk of potential catastrophic failure. Ever increasing traffic is subjecting old bridges to loads far beyond those for which they were originally designed. The Service carries out, as a matter of priority, all urgent works reported or identified by inspection and it also programmes other work to fit available funding.
