Scottish Sustainable Marine Environment Initiative
The coasts and seas are a vital part of Scotland's natural heritage, economy and cultural identity. They support a rich variety of habitats and life, and provide a significant economic and social resource for the country.
Our coasts and seas are under increasing pressure from many demands, uses and management pressures. Coastal development, fisheries management and the demands of aquaculture must be balanced with the needs and ambitions of the leisure and recreational industries. Scotland’s natural and cultural heritage are key assets, and must be protected and conserved. Many Scottish rural coastal communities are under increasing social and economic pressure.
To ensure the sustainable management of Scotland’s precious coastal and marine resources, the key step is to deliver healthier seas and thriving coastal communities.
The Scottish Sustainable Marine Environment Initiative (SSMEI) is a unique and innovative approach in developing a joined up approach in marine planning for Scotland. The SSMEI - led by the Scottish Government, working with local authorities and other partners - aims to develop and then test the benefits of new management ideas for the sustainable development of Scotland's marine resources. This is being carried out through pilot projects on the Shetland Islands the Berwickshire Coast, the Sound of Mull and the Firth of Clyde.
The SSMEI will build upon and complement existing initiatives such as the UK-led Marine Stewardship Report, the Review of Marine Nature Conservation and in particular the Regional Seas Pilot Scheme in the Irish Sea.
