Planning and Economic Development
The Planning and Economic Development department (PED) provides services that are key to improving the quality of life in the Scottish Borders. Our work is driven by economic, environmental and social change in the region.
We are divided into two services:
- Planning and Building Standards
- Economic Development and Regeneration
These services have a wide remit. Our key priorities are to:
- Provide effective and efficient regulatory services through Building Standards and Development Control
- Provide up-to-date Development Plans (Structure Plan, Local Plan and Supplementary Policy)
- Develop and maintain information resources
- Ensure policies encourage sustainable development in the Scottish Borders and co-ordinate the Council’s Environmental Action Plan and the New Ways Environmental Strategy.
- Improve the access to, quality, condition and understanding of the natural and built environment
- Promote the Scottish Borders and its products, and co-ordinate the Council’s tourism related activities and events
- Influence the development of all sectors of the Scottish Borders economy and maximise the value and effectiveness of European funding
- Regenerate the economy and improve the quality of life in our local communities
- Support small and medium-sized businesses, and provide business/ employment land and property.
