Scottish Borders District, Coldstream
A warm welcome awaits you in the Border town
of Coldstream
Coldstream, the Gateway to Scotland and the First True BorderToon, is situated on the banks of the beautiful River Tweed, which forms a natural boundary between Scotland and England.
Couples choosing to marry in Coldstream will forever be part of a long, romantic tradition of eloping couples. Just down the road from the Registration Office, at the Scottish end of Coldstream Bridge, is the Old Marriage House. In the 19th century, Coldstream rivalled Gretna Green as a wedding venue for hundreds of couples. It is said that five earls and at least two Lord Chancellors of England ran away to Coldstream to be married. The town still retains the original charm and riverside setting that drew them here.
Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet and writer of some of the most romantic poems and songs ever written (including 'My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose'), crossed the same bridge when he entered England for the first time in 1787.
Coldstream is the birthplace of the Coldstream Guards, the oldest regular British Regiment in continual existence, and the only one today that is named after a town. Its troops still guard the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Its motto, Nulli Secundus or Second to None, is what we aim to offer you in the way of care and sensitivity as you plan your special wedding day.
The recently refurbished Marriage Room is in the old Town Hall, a stately stone building in the High Street. It is light, high-ceilinged and impressive, with a magnificent hammer-beam roof, but not too overwhelming in size. Thus it is ideal for either small, intimate weddings or for more elaborate ones, accommodating up to 100 people. The stunning public gardens opposite provide a perfect backdrop for photos, with a stone tower that once was a meeting- place for lovers and breathtaking, panoramic views of the River Tweed and the Cheviot Hills.
Come to Coldstream and re-live its romantic history on your day of days.
Marriage, Civil Partnership and Renewal of Vows ceremonies can be held Monday to Saturday by arrangement with the Registrar. Ceremonies can now also be held on a Sunday at an extra charge. Wedding couples can also obtain their own licences for other venues of their choice, including unusual locations.
