Summary
The Scottish Borders Coastline is of international environmental significance. Its importance in these terms is underlined by a number of marine, coastal and environmental designations. Away from the coast there are many inland areas of the Scottish Borders that are also of significant environmental and economic importance.
The Scottish Borders Council Oil and Chemical Pollution Plan has been developed to provide a framework for a multi-agency response to pollution incidents which could affect the coastline as well as lochs, reservoirs, rivers and other inland areas. Those parts of the plan dealing with coastal pollution draw on guidance provided by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
