Scrutiny
Scrutiny's role is to hold the Executive to account for its decisions and actions; the services the Council provides and the effect these have on the Scottish Borders.
Someone has to ask the questions -
- Why is the Council doing this?
- Is this the best way?
- Can it be improved?
Asking these questions is Scrutiny's job.
What is Scrutiny?
In 2001, Scottish Borders Council moved from a traditional 'committee' system to a modern 'Executive and Scrutiny' system.
The Executive takes the decision previously taken by committees. Scrutiny's role is to hold the Executive to account for:
- its decisions and actions
- the services the Council provides
- the effect these have on the Scottish Borders.
What does Scrutiny do?
- It carries out reviews on behalf of the Council
- It monitors the implementation of Council policies and delivery of its services
- It checks the decisions of the Executive and the effect of these decisions.
