British Sign Language Plan

Our British Sign Language (BSL) Plan 2018-24 is the way in which we meet the requirements of the BSL(Scotland) Act 2015.

BSL Plan Aim

The aim is to make Scotland the best place in the world for BSL users to:

  • live
  • learn
  • work
  • visit

This means people whose first or preferred language is BSL will be fully involved in daily and public life in Scotland, as active, healthy citizens and will be able to make informed choices about evey aspect of their lives.

Public consultation and engagement

Along with NHS Borders and Borders College, we held a joint engagement event and public consultation.

Our BSL Plan

We took a holistic approach to developing our BSL plan, with a focus on embedding BSL within our approach to:

  • customer services
  • communication
  • training

In September 2018 Councillor Elaine Thornton-Nicol was appointed our Champion for the Deaf Community.
